Ghana won five awards at the 2010 Model United Nations Session for Middle and High Schools in the United States of America.
Ghana's Amofuah Smart from Queensland International School had “honorary mention” at the UNICEF Committee at the UN Headquarters in New York, while Esther Dzifa Tolbert of Englebert School; Peter Fletcher of Queensland International School; Kennedy Dery, SAPS School and Eric Otcherfo from Queens International School won the remaining three awards at the U.S State Department in Washington DC. The Communications Director of Lifelink Friendship Schools, organisers of the trip, told the Daily Graphic that the session discussed human trafficking, access to education, Afghanistan and economic development. The Executive Director of Lifelink Friendship Schools, Ernest Gyimah-Danquah said Ghana participated in the annual sessions for the fifth time and said the experiences are worthwhile. 'We have succeeded in ensuring many young persons embrace and appreciate international diplomacy, dialoguing and consensus-building', said Gyimah-Danquah who led Ghana's 63-member student delegation to the April and May sessions. The annual event is organised by the Global Classrooms Project, the UN Association of USA and supported by global finance firm, Merriyl Lynch, with the aim of grooming young persons in global politics and international diplomacy. U.S Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in a speech read for her, expressed the hope that the model UN experience would deepen the students’ interest and engagement in foreign affairs . The delegation has since returned home.
