The executive director of the organization, Boakye-Yiadom said punitive action should be taken against officials of such an agency that will be responsible for curbing accidents.
Statistics show that a total of one hundred and twenty-three (123) lives have been lost through a total of 539 road accidents in the month of January, 2011 alone.
518 people suffered varying degrees of injuries with the total number of vehicles involved in the accidents put at 764.
The police administration has promised that it is waging a crusade to fight lawlessness on the roads.
However, speaking to Citi News, Mr Boakye-Yiadom said progress is not been made in curbing accidents because no one is in charge of preventing carnage on the roads.
According to him, the government is not getting it right when it comes to preventing road accidents.
“In 2009 when there was an increase in road accidents the President summoned stakeholders to find a lasting solution to this problem. One of their recommendations was that there should be pre-departure checks at all stations before the cars move”.
“Most of these GPRTU members are all interested in the sales that these drivers make, they are not interested in the safety of the passengers...if no one is held responsible road accidents is going to kill us”.
“The main solution to this problem is to have an institution or a person held responsible whenever there is an accident”.
Road safety advocacy organization, the Akwaaba Foundation has predicted that there would be more accident cases in the coming months unless the government mandates an agency to solely prevent accidents.
