Bawku (U/E), Oct. 13, GNA - Women in the Bawku Municipality and its environs have threatened to abandon the kitchen and move into active politics because that is the only way to attain equity in the society.
They said this was in line with PNDC Law 208 that allows citizens, regardless of their gender, to participate in decision making.
The women said this at a forum organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for women's groups and civil society organizations.
The forum was to encourage women to participate in the upcoming district assembly election. The Municipal Director, Mr. Joseph Agoona, said women were influential in the development of every community and that the decentralized concept of governance would be an advantage to encourage women to participate in local level elections. He said when governance was brought to the door steps of the woman she eventually would develop the interest to participate and contribute to decision making.
Mr Agoona said women over the years had proved to be effective in bringing up children, home management and community development. The Principal Field Officer for the NCCE in Bawku, Mrs Selina Issaka, called on women aspirants who had contested the District Assembly elections before to set good grounds for their colleagues who intend to join them.

To take effect from Thursday, the cut will take Asda petrol prices down to 115.9p a litre, while its diesel will drop 1p to 118.9p a litre.
Asda commercial director David Miles said: "Yet again, Asda is leading UK fuel prices down. Motorists will be relieved commodity prices are coming down and as always we are the first to reflect falling costs in our prices at the pump."
The news came as the AA said that average UK petrol prices, which reached an all-time record of 121.61p a litre last week, had stabilised for the first time since late February.
The UK price of petrol dipped to 121.54p a litre on Monday, while the average diesel price is now 122.94p a litre, but the AA said UK fuel prices should have gone down by more, as the wholesale price of petrol in north-west European had fallen of late.
AA president Edmund King added: "The failure so far to pass on wholesale petrol price cuts is leaving hard-pressed drivers feeling short-changed at the pumps.
"Fuel is an unavoidable and essential purchase for drivers and many would prefer to see pump prices come down instead of having to go to the next town for cheaper prices or having to qualify for savings, such as spending £50 in store first."
He went on: "Last week, a co-ordinator for volunteer drivers phoned the AA to say that high fuel prices were threatening an exodus.
"She had recently been contacted by her local ambulance trust asking to borrow volunteer drivers for hospital runs because many of theirs had given up. That is why the AA asks fuel retailers to pass on savings if they can."
Regionally, Yorkshire and Humberside remains the cheapest area for petrol (120.7p a litre) and diesel (122.2p a litre) in the UK, while Northern Ireland (122.1p) and south-east England (also 122.1p) are the most expensive for petrol. Northern Ireland drivers are also paying most for diesel (123.7p).

Legal & General has launched a new mortgage where applicants do not need to be credit scored.
Legal & General Mortgage Club has launched a new mortgage where applicants do not need to be credit scored. The two-year fixed-rate mortgage, which has a rate of 3.35pc, is the only offer of its kind available to borrowers.
Martin Smith, head of mortgages at Legal & General, said: "Credit scoring has its place but complex prime cases are not always catered for by this approach. There are many reasons why an otherwise creditworthy borrower might generate a low credit score. Ditching credit scoring is an innovative, back to basics way of looking at lending and the rate on this product is extremely competitive too."
The product, which is provided by Hanley Economic Building Society, comes with a £100 booking fee and a £1,399 administration fee and is available to a maximum loan-to-value (LTV) of 75pc.
Melanie Bien, director of mortgage broker Savills Private Finance, said: "A product that uses old-fashioned underwriting rather than a formulaic credit score is welcome as this is very rare in the mainstream market, and the rate is also quite competitive."
However, Ms Bien pointed out that borrowers should be wary, as the lender is likely to be more cautious if it is considering applications on a case-by-case basis than it would with generic credit scoring.
She said: "For example, it may take a harder line with regard to existing debt, loan multiples, and other properties in the background."
Borrowers who are interested in checking their credit history before they apply, can get a copy of their credit file for as little as £2 from one of Britain's three credit reference agencies, Equifax ( www.equifax.co.uk ), Experian ( www.experian.co.uk ) and Callcredit ( www.experian.co.uk )
